Seaside

My windswept heart
Has adapted to the climate
And become a barrier island
Full of dunes,
Full of dunes.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE

who tip the scales
of one another
towards harmony
coax a full flour moon
on the butcher block
in patient steady
swirls
who stop to notice
each other’s tiny rages
in soothing time
knowing no small passion
deserves the total
flood
where do these people
live, what bungalows
what lofts, what
wine caves
how wild are
their gardens
do they play the game
where you find your
stripper name
from the street where you
were born
how were they raised,
under which doctrines
what paperbacks did their
English teachers give them
after class
what perfect wisdom
do they recall
in the heat of the morning
when everything begs
in terrorizing volume
who made
that wisdom
up

Shadow economy

What does it reveal:
The extra cold shadow outside the Whole Foods on Houston?
The straining whistle from one homeless man
To another across four lanes of traffic?
The new ancient grain for 6.99 a pound?
The aisles filled with employees
Pushing shopping carts full of goods
To be biked and lugged
and gently placed in soft hands?

The Fizz

Tart and tang,
or a rounded corn syrup note,
the fizz has gone,
so the rest will surely
evaporate,
forgotten,
but an idea
sick to the
inner chamber
of a can.
