GRANOLA

making granola today and remembering
the Joshua Tree mouse with a taste for it
so strong he chewed through a ziplock bag in the trunk of the car
we left the doors flung open on our mushroom trip
while laughing at ants or making math problems from
warning signs throughout the campsite “1 gallon of water per person per hour”
so if you have 5 people for 6 hours how many gallons do you need?
then laughing like children in the back of math class again
though there was no one there to hear or chastise us
sobered up the next day we traveled home
and the mouse traveled north with us at least to Oregon
where we discovered the hole in the granola ziplock
then the bag of chips then a rice-like turd under the seat
we got home for winter and Emily got pregnant and I started
my first real job and fell in love in a new way and
suddenly everything was
unrecognizable
the way I had dreamed of
a mouse
the same mouse?
ate snacks it found
in the car and made a nest on the engine
the little turds trailing under the hood
I cleaned and left peppermint oil sprinkled around to urge it off
which conveniently was also supposed to help my migraines
and eventually it was gone
I started making granola monthly after that trip
newly convinced it was worth it
until everything changed again

and now it’s been over a year

Grand Amour

With great love comes great pain
With all the things you've done
That hurt me
The one that sears the most
Is that you
Still chew gum
With an open mouth
After all these years
Of supplication

The Joke

I told a bad joke
like really bad
evil bad
Someone told it to me in college
and everyone thought it was funny because it was so horrible
the kind of joke where the response to the punchline is always someone declaring “that’s awful!”
and I warned everyone how bad it was before I told it
and I tried not to tell it
but they insisted
when I finished I regretted telling it
and someone declared “that’s awful”
and I said “I told you it would be!”

and later that night you told me
how sick you got
when you lost your health insurance
and your meds ran out
and you were hospitalized
when the HIV turned to full blown AIDS
and how my dad isn’t supposed to know

And all I can think about is that joke I told
And how I wish I could take it back
And five years later how it still haunts me
And  I wonder what you think of me
And if anything changed between us because I told that joke before I knew anything
And I don’t know if I’ve ever told you how sorry I am for that joke
Such an urgency to leave,
I've come up with at least 10
exit strategies for most conversations.

If the point is staying, and it is
what do I do with this urgency I feel.

I'd rather there be a release or a New Earth.
Instead, my feet are encapsulated in concrete
and I have 653 balloons tied to my arms.

Exposure; this is a word I've begun floating
as an attribute of the divine.

All of the balloons tied around my wrists deflate
and drag me into the earth.
What if I stayed in this conversation with you?

Land Grab

Before you've learned to move,
you stick a hand out
and pull the world towards you.
Baubles, workaday objects,
to things we have released,
to be in the world of objects.

Then when you can move,
and, imbued with the spirit of
used napkins, lids, sticky cables,
you make things happen,
and it still makes sense to
reach and not move.

I wear contacts now,
a full year of true periphery leased.
I've waved my arms around,
called upon my ideas,
watched them ping back,
pinned as they are,
to the edge of my sightline.

STOPPING KEEPING

Some people who know
and don’t know you
talked about if you were funny
last night.
Funny as a person.
If you are or are not funny.
You aren’t dead/ weren’t dead,
just  far enough away
to be really far away.
They ate chips and talked
about loving chips.
I close my eyes to see/remember
yours.
Truth expires, kumquat bursts,
feet return.
There’s ground down there.
So far continued trends
include: embodiment (feet:ground),
de-shame as the new shame.
I wonder what you’d say.
How your eyes would hold your
patience or impatience.
To be honest, I don’t know.
Bermuda triangle, the rumors are true:
I have no expertise.
(I know you’d eat more chips
than planned, that I’d eat more chips
than you.)
Funny is a flavor?
Your eyes your eyes.
When you laughed/ forever
because someone/thing
was so funny to you.

Your strokes

Vanquish your heebee geebees to the dumpster
There’s a cure for that at the health food store
We’re fumbling on different fields
I’m trying to learn
How to reach over
Move myself
out of the way
And get closer

What’s the fun of a cake
If it arrives on time?
I could try to be a person
Who feels
The stress is half the fun
And the release is the drug
I’m not around the corner
Or anywhere close

Capricorn Stellium

so many aligning planets
Capricorn blood
don't fail me now
while my pay grade
may go retrograde
i'm the kind that could still
sink on solid ground

major shifts in the stars
still strike my stomach like
a bowling bowl
in the alley

rolling endless gutter balls
into the gutter
align with the clutter
of needs unfed
and the swift demands
of promise not met

i've got so much potential
and expectations
to not live up to
it's a surprise i'm even living
like this

cramped in a Capricorn corner
i've ambitiously painted
myself into
just days after the
embarrassing anniversary
of my birth

Ice Storm

The birch branches bow down
bent by the weight of a 2 inch coating of ice.

As I walk through the canopy they create,
a white passageway to a stillborn world,

I wonder what it would take
to make me bend like that

to make me cry out in that blank space
a sound sharp enough to crack

a stiff back. For a moment
I envy those trees in their

frozen prostration. It has been so
long since I prayed to anyone.
