fuck you--
a text
from dad,
and that was the moment
our relationship started to end

Deathbed

Moonface and wild eyes
Like an animal
Searching for a face
That made sense
I don't know if you knew
That you told me you love me
That it was the last thing you said
I don't know if you meant it
Or if you were listening to instinct
Either way
I hope your animal heart
Stopped when your terror
Finally subsided
In the warm waters of
You've Done Well Enough

a distant faucet

a distant faucet
steams shower water
an unremarkable hum
constant white static

pipe bursts startles
transitory clanging
a furnace breathing fire
hammering in the
 neighboring room

a tinnitus high frequency
the background noise
of podcasts
of roommates grooming
of house cats purring

the added distraction-
      subtraction
from the whole of living life
      at its highest

Boys

What happened to the boys I grew up with? The boys who would catch frogs with me at the pond. The ones who ran barefoot on the lawn and let me shoot their BB guns.
The ones who cried when they didn’t get their nails painted because that’s for girls. The ones who belched the alphabet. The ones who made up dance routines to Madonna with me and my older sister. Who wrestled me and gave me bruises because I was one of them.
The ones who skipped rope, who held flashlights under the blankets while I told the ghost stories and who never, ever wrote the words No Girls Allowed.

These boys were like my brothers. These boys who weren’t boys at all and who let me be not a girl. What happens to boys then? Because I am not friends with any men.

calle peris mencheta

por qué no te sonríes?
Loli corners me in the kitchen
es tu papá aquí
I'm stiff like the sofa
I take down a poster at the bodega
and blush when the shopkeeper calls me out
I meet with a classmate to draft a manifesto
at the coffee shop
I discreetly tape up a whimsical flyer
with my phone number
and wait for the calls to roll in
I'm doing things wrong
I see myself from the outside
at a bar too noisy to talk
I'm abroad
I buy a kids bike at the Thursday fería
I watch the city roll by
pushing through the oppressive heat
I think I'm smiling
but I know I'm not

Blasted

Get me blasted didn't quit the news
to be quiet.
Take my face to the tannery,
my friends for pirate dentistry,
spiralled, my spine,
pop my knees,
on the night bus back.

I'm in shame
what of these jokes
I'm telling now
and of the details surely
I should only know.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF DIVING

Little bent and braided head
at the crowded dinner table,
in the station wagon,
eating raisins,
listening to loud music.

Little lanky body
staring at rocket ship curtains,
bouncing balls
against the wall.

What was hanging
on the walls?
Nothing else you love
will matter as much.

A polar bear, a volcano,
cartoon Chinese children
pushing a persimmon
through red space.
