Ghost

an epiphany
I had it once
10.5 years later
then came you
back to shatter what I thought I realized
about us
my oh so miraculous discovery
that epiphany before you and after you and about you
back to tell me everything has changed and everything is just the same
you have grown and you have remained just the same
you are the ghost that haunts me and the ghost I never want to leave

Polecat

You have a childlike innocence, he told me
and I wanted it to be true despite the car-
wreck smile on my face I rummaged for
dialectical behavior therapy worksheets:

Hold on to the car that is running over you,
deconstruct the tread marks on your face,
cling to the grill and sizzle, scrape your self
purposefully across the windshield, and breathe.

Follow your breath into the air-conditioning
he's yet to turn off, your pungentdeathodor will fill his nostrils
and he will know what he has done. You don't have
to say anything. Let him crack his window and begone.

Thank you, I replied.

Right Now

It is so easy to hate you
For not trying
As if you saw nothing
In need of saving
Deserving time
It is also
So easy
To sit across from you
Drawing as I write
To the soundtrack of you chewing
Steady as a heartbeat
"My guy!" my exaltation –
Though you sailed that ship
Away some time ago it seems

Jupiter Ice Blue

you could
walk the rings of saturn
i'd be sadder
but for you

jupiter ice blue
it's like your eyes
i feel it too

you could be distant
a galaxy unseeable
from my telescope
yeah there's no hope
i'll ever reach you

you could scatter
amongst the stars
scavenger that you are
what the Universe
    is expanding into
makes you more far today
    than i ever knew

you're more far away today
    than you ever were

LITTLE WOUND

Make a hole
put something shiny there
something to converse with
your eyes, hair
all the places
light rests
alert skin to make
new walls
the skin might try
to swallow the intruder
take good care
apply antiseptic
pile hair with enough
twists and caverns
so power may settle
in the folds
remember your back
is happier
when it’s straight
thank the little wound
for its submission.

Peak Road (One)

he wanted his mom
to take down her Obama poster
after he was elected
or else it was too much
like worshipping a dictator

he wanted to live
on the 28 hour day schedule
but was getting lonely

after we'd broken up
he gave me back my bobby pins
that he'd found strewn around his room

he was particular
both our hair was thick and curly
we were youthful
but him more so

I took something from him
in his basement I think

why can't we all just stay in love?
add new ones to the old ones in a big pile?

the darkness all around
and the headlights of my car steering home
my brake lights know all the curves

The Coincidence

Also sprach Zarathustra
is on the radio,
pop classical,
the other station went down,
with the tree de-lighting ceremony,
it must have pinballed in here
between the baubles.
Alight, I go a-lighting,
I have alighted from synthesis,
we should all have these 12 days,
honour some cracks in the canon,
I dunno,
can't we celebrate at the same time?
My station,
it comes back in when I'm near,
the staple in my chest and all that,
and seven years from now,
back in hospital again,
trying to type,
through a smear of morphine,
as the nurses howl,
and my ward mate blathers.
